Olive oil
Oil production in Thassos is a process that has been developed and perfected for thousands of years. The olive tree is considered a blessed tree in this place. None of this beneficial plant is lost. The fruit is eaten and used to produce oil. Its leaves can be used as food for animals while its wood is an ideal fuel and in the hands of wood carvers takes shape and becomes art.
Near Skala Prinou there is the Olive-Oil Museum which is open all year round. There you can see the methods they used to produce oil in our country 6,000 years ago.
Honey
Two types of honey are produced on the island. The darkest pine honey from the green pines and the flower honey that has a lighter amber color from the wildflowers. Both are extremely tasty and beneficial.
You can visit the Apicultural Cooperative in the area near Skala Prinou where you will buy honey and honey products (wax, propolis pollen, royal jelly) in very good prices.
You can also get honey from independent producers in almost any part of the island.
Spoon sweets
The special sweets of the spoon of Thassos, made with excellent quality honey, occupy a special place in the gastronomy of the island. The best known is the walnut ,“Karidaki”. It is made from walnuts, which are harvested quite early in the spring before they acquire a hard shell and with a special process are transformed into a special very tasty and nutritious dessert. Other desserts include figs, zucchini, oranges, roses and quinces.
In addition to the ‘spoon sweets’, there are other traditional sweets such as halva with the key and the ashes that are made mainly in the village of Kallirahi as well as the Saragli, a traditional handmade pie sheet which they pour over with honey and nuts and bake in the oven.
Wine - Tsipouro
The production of wine in Thassos is very small and there are few labels on the market. You can try excellent local wine from private productions. In the mountain village of Kazaviti you will find local good wine.
Local growers have given more weight to the production of tsipouro. The tsipouro of Thassos is excellent.Herbs - spices
Famous aromatic plants and herbs of Thassos island are the aromatic RIGANI (oreganon)that grows in the mountains of Thassos, the laurel, the rosemary, the hypericum as well as products from their extracts such as the Spatholado of Thassos.
